J. Russ Smith is a partner and a member of the Healthcare, Medical Malpractice, Nursing Home/Skilled Nursing Facility/Assisted Living Facility and Long Term Care & Elder practice groups. Over the past 30 years, his legal practice has concentrated on defense of physicians, nurses and hospitals in medical malpractice cases; defense of nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities and assisted living facilities and representing healthcare professionals involved state medical license investigations. Mr. Smith conducts risk management assessments of the policies, procedures, and practices of hospitals and physician office practices to implement client specific methods to enhance communication between healthcare providers and patients; examines existing policies, procedures and medical forms to insure compliance with recent changes in state and Federal laws; and designs programs based on the results of the assessment to enhance patient safety, improve patient satisfaction and decrease litigation exposure. He handles matters from the date of injury before litigation has been initiated through trial. Mr. Smith frequently speaks at continuing education conferences and healthcare provider seminars regarding the importance of medical documentation to successfully litigating a matter, methods of improving quality of care and safety through effective communication with patients, and conducts mock depositions and trials to provide healthcare providers insight into the litigation process.
In the Spring of 2001, Mr. Smith’s desire to promote Mental Health awareness in order to reduce the stigma and prejudice encountered by those living with a mental illness led him to attend the University of Central Florida on a full time basis. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree in December of 2002 with a perfect 4.0 average. He entered the University of Central Florida Clinical Psychology PhD program in the Fall of 2003 and completed the Masters portion of the program before deciding to return back to the practice of law in January of 2004. admittedly, this is sort of fluffy, but clients find it interesting.
Mr. Smith philanthropic activities include providing pro bono legal services to local businesses who have been the target of “hate speech” protestors and fund raising for the True Colors Foundation, a charitable organization founded by Cyndi Lauper that provides counseling and housing to LGBTQ homeless youth.
