Hurricane Irma was a storm of unprecedented magnitude. The mere size of the storm more than covered the entire State of Florida and led to the largest evacuation in U.S. history. While all nursing homes and assisted living facilities have state-approved disaster plans, no one could truly know what would happen with this storm and its aftermath. It is a tragedy that any nursing home residents passed away due to conditions created by this hurricane, and our heartfelt condolences go out to all the residents and families affected. However, it is important to avoid a rush-to-judgment that is currently taking place (both in the media and with the government). It is imperative that a thorough investigation be undertaken to determine what transpired and why, followed by the implementation of systems and procedures to improve care that will be applicable to all healthcare facilities (not only in Florida, but throughout the country). The caregivers at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills performed valiantly and tirelessly during the storm and afterward to care for their residents, and we thank them for it.
